On the Rock

Matthew 7:24-27“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”
Life isn’t always an easy-breezy summer’s day. Sometimes it’s stormy. Small storms that pass through quickly or BIG storms that change our lives. Christians aren’t exempt from these storms. In John 16:33, Jesus pretty much tells it like it is: ‘In this world, you will have trouble.’ So, how does one handle the storms that blow through one’s life?
2025 was a stormy year for our family. It was a year that focused me on my faith and what I really believe about God and His presence and plan for my life. I felt a lot of gratitude for that faith (which I relied on heavily) – a faith that assured me I wasn’t navigating the storms alone. I can’t imagine (thankfully) how people without faith navigate their storms. It must seem so rudderless – hopeless – helpless.
I started thinking about this after really listening to the lyrics of Firm Foundation (_Cody Carnes). The lyrics read:
Christ is my firm foundation
The Rock on which I stand
When everything around me is shaken
I’ve never been more glad
That I put my faith in Jesus
‘Cause He’s never let me down
He’s faithful through generations
So why would He fail now?
He won’t
…And He didn’t! What a blessing to experience His presence which was palpable throughout the storms… and all throughout my life, and yours, too. Take a look back of the storms you’ve weathered and know that your Rock was there for you, too! And He always will be – count on it.
I’ll end with another song quote from My Feet Are On the Rock (_I Am They):
When I feel my hope about to break
I will rest on Your unchanging grace
Let the waters come and the earth give way
I’ll be dancing in the rain
My feet are on the Rock

p.s. While writing this I received a notification from Xfinity that had ‘storm tips’ – weird ‘coincidence’. Here’s my storm tip: Ground yourself in Jesus. There’s not a storm He can’t help you navigate.
