Fearfully and Wonderfully Made

Psalm 119:73  Your hands have made and fashioned me.

Psalm 139:14 I praise You for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are Your works; my soul knows it very well.

My husband, Joel, has recently undergone yet another knee surgery. (he’s had so many we’ve actually lost count) But the 2 ‘biggies’ over the years were partial knee replacements in each knee. Now, one could look at the above verses and be a bit cynical about his body (or any of our bodies) being wonderfully made. If that’s true, why are we ‘breaking down’ so often! Besides all of Joel’s knee surgeries, add things like torn tendons in his leg and arm, shoulder surgery, etc. Not to mention ‘breakdowns’ of my own: gall bladder, appendix, hysterectomy, thyroidectomy, and a knee replacement of my own. Seriously, the number of things that can go wrong with our ‘wonderfully made’ bodies is mind-boggling. But let’s remember, God never intended it to be that way. Our fall into sin brought a whole host of problems including physical weaknesses. But, God in His mercy, also created our bodies to heal…sometimes by themselves or sometimes by the medicine or technology He has gifted some people to invent.

Think of the trauma a mother of baby experiences at birth, yet (generally speaking) they heal. Cuts, bruises, broken bones – heal. Body parts wear out and can be replaced – and the body heals. From colds to cancer there are treatments to help the body heal. Now, I know that not every disease is cured; not everyone survives a trauma and that reasons why I leave it in God’s hands. But I do believe that death can accomplish the ultimate healing. Just think of spending eternity with our Creator and Savior – minus all the earthly pain and sickness and worry and sadness and…and…and…

So, as I watch my husband or myself (or maybe you) go through physical trials, I pray that Psalm 41:3 is a comfort and I focus on the truth that we are indeed fearfully and wonderfully made by the Creator and the Great Physician. Thank You, God, for Your healing mercies!

Ps. 41:3 The Lord sustains him on his sick bed; in his illness You restore him to full health.
