Foundation
It seems like the theme of foundation, particularly Christ as our firm foundation, keeps coming up. We introduced the contemporary song “Firm Foundation (He Won’t),” the choir is singing “Christ the Lord is our Sure Foundation,” the song we introduced at the worship band retreat speaks about God’s love as our firm foundation, and last Sunday, Pr. Guy led us through “On Christ the Solid Rock I Stand.”
It is something we say and sing often. We need to say and sing it often because it is not our inclination. We are prone to constructing false foundations. Our hearts wander onto sandy paths that shift beneath us.
Admittedly, I wanted to introduce “Firm Foundation (He Won’t)” as a new song this month because of the election and all the angst it causes. Certainly, our political leanings and our politicians can become false foundations. Our well-being and peace can become yoked to political outcomes. Other false foundations might include our possessions and bank accounts, our families, and our comforts and leisure activities.
As I was thinking about my own false foundations, I was reminded of a lyric from “Firm Foundation (He Won’t)” : “He’s faithful in every season, so why would He fail now?” Instead of being content in my current season, I tend to live with my thoughts far out into the future. I tend to build up my own storehouses of future comfort and security. This becomes a false foundation and I neglect to be fully present to what is in front of me now.
We all have our false and fleeting foundations. May we continue to gather, confess, and encourage one another as we follow Christ, the only firm foundation.
