Jesus is Our True North

In the last few weeks before VBS, I find myself in much the same spot as years before.  Things are all over the place, both literally and figuratively. My office is filled with things and my to-do list never seems to get shorter. It is all, generally, organized chaos, but if you look into my office, you might wonder if I’m getting anything done.

This year’s theme for VBS is True North. We will be learning about the promises that God gives us through Jesus, and how we can always trust those promises. Our world is a mess. It always has been a mess, but with smartphones and the 24 hour news cycle, the mess is inescapable. As much as we’d like to wrap our children up to insulate them from the craziness, they are not ignorant of the insanity of our world. This year’s VBS theme seems particularly timely. Everyone needs to know the peace and comfort that trusting in Jesus brings.

Much like my office right before VBS, it may seem like nothing good or useful is getting done, but we can know and trust that Jesus is working for us in the mess. Unlike my work with VBS, Jesus’ work is perfect and He never forgets any one of us. It’s definitely a wild world out there, but we can all trust that Jesus is our True North. When we keep ourselves pointed toward him, we can trust that He is the one in control of all things.
