The Power of the Word

I think we often underestimate the power of the spoken word. As I write this, I’m sitting in a Starbucks finishing up my sermon for Sunday. I happened to catch the eyes of a baristan and they were brimming with tears. Since she was wearing a headset, I assumed something had happened in the drive through and this was confirmed when her manager came up and said, “It’s ok… No one deserves to be talked to like that.”

I have no idea what was said or why, but I did I see the result. Words caused a young lady to hurt and it required a manager to spend 5 minutes encouraging and consoling her.

Witnessing the power of mortal words, served to remind me that Jesus’ Words ARE power.

His Words have the power to create.  He says, “Let there be…” and there is.

His Words have the power to kill and make alive.  He says, “I baptize you in the name of the Father, Son and Holy Spirit.” And we are put to death, buried and crucified in our sin and raised to new life.

His Words have the power to restore and make new.  He says, “I forgive you.” and sin is washed away, bringing new life and restored relationships.

His Words have the power to bring us together. He says, “This is my body and blood for the forgiveness of sins” and we come into communion with Him and one another.  We are brought together as one.

His Words have the power to provide guidance in an unsteady and unstable world.  He says, “I am the Way, the Truth and the Life.” And demonstrates his faithfulness every day.  His will is what’s best for us and His love is endless.

His Word is what we proclaim to one another and the lost world around us.  Never forget that in this life, His Word IS Power. His Word rings with authority. His Word is the light that shines in the darkness and the darkness will never overcome it.

Never forget that His Words were, “It is finished.” Trust that in His way and according to the Father’s will and timing, His Word will bring about a new heaven and a new earth.  Such is the Power of His Word.  Praise be to God!
