Some Trust in Chariots, Some Trust in Horses

“Some trust in chariots, some trust in horses, but we trust in the name of the LORD our God.” This bit of poetry from Psalm 20 is a lifetime favorite for me, yet I am still surprised at how much it is a challenge.
As believers, our trust is not in our own strength or in worldly power (chariots and horses). Those things do not save. Our human achievements and resources and political structures do not give deliverance to the problems we currently face. Only trust in God’s character and promises are a true foundation for us.
I can name my own “chariots” and “horses.” I am aware of at least a few of the skills and resources I use, or rather attempt to use, to become the master of my own fate. But these things are like a hole in a bucket. They are never enough and bring only problems and anxiety. Jesus promises a different way for us, a way that is everlasting.
What are some of your chariots and horses today? Admit them to God and put your trust in Him.
